- Be ready for Wed. Practice Sept. 3rd Please make sure to bring your chosen reading selection, have it typed out and printed. Highlight character dialog with distinct colors. Ex. If you have a book with a fox, a bear and a girl, make the fox’s dialog one color -like green, make the bear one color - like yellow - make the girl’s dialog one color like pink. Pick any colors you’d like just make sure you can read it and that the color is consistent throughout the whole story. Read over your piece several times this weekend. Think about your characters and how they might sound or behave. Work on writing an intro to your story (this will probably be edited but get your first draft done).
This practice, First, I will perform part of a performance as if I’m inexperienced and have you all critique me. Critique is how we grow and watching an example can help more than describing sometimes. Next I will make some changes and let you guys see again. Afterwards, I will listen to part of some of your pieces and give guidance. We only have an hour for practice so I won’t have time to listen to full reads. However, before Wednesday, you should practice reading your piece out loud and time yourself. If your piece isn’t at least 6 minutes, we might have to consider finding another piece.
If you are struggling with finding a suitable piece, take a look at A Bad Case of the Stripes or Princess Camilla Gets Her Way. Both are books that are long enough, have multiple characters and have a good message. Your ideal piece should have these things, look for similar. Also, you will need a mini black binder for competition.
You do not have to buy it through amazon, I am just sharing a link so you can see an example.
